An introduction to the open-air museum
If this is your first visit to Kulturen or you simply want to know more about the museum and its buildings then this is the tour for you.
After a short overview of the museum’s history and its rather eccentric founder, Georg Karlin, you’ll be taken on a walking tour of the open-air museum. You will get to hear some of the many exciting stories waiting to be told about the houses: Where was the Deanery before it was moved to Kulturen, and what is a Dean? Where did the “father of gymnastics” Per Henrik Ling live and is it true that he let his students practice their swimming in the pond? Did you know that the “Peace of Lund” treaty was signed in one of our buildings? Our houses reflect the many layers of society as it once was, and have been lived in by people from all walks of life, city dwellers and rural folk alike.
The tour is held outdoors. Participants will have the opportunity to go inside the houses once the tour is finished.
Duration: 45 or 60 minutes.

Homes and their people
Kulturen’s collection of houses range from the Middle Ages through to the 1900s. As we visit a selection of these houses you will hear about the people who once lived in them.
What did life in the 1930s look like for the Andersson family who lived in the Worker’s Home? What was it like to grow up as part of Professor Thomander’s family? How did one work, eat and sleep in the well-to-do farmhouse from Blekinge county? This tour provides a fascinating insight into the fates of people from a variety of social backgrounds who lived in these houses at different points in time.
Duration: 45 mins (2-3 houses) or 60 mins (3-4 houses).

Scanian artefact challenge – test your knowledge!
Do you know what a rush-light holder is? Have you seen a yeast wreath before? If you have then you’ll have the advantage over your colleagues in our popular artefact quiz! Together with our knowledgeable guide you will visit three of the houses in the museum, hear about the lives of the people to lived there and see a variety of household items used for both everyday and festive occasions. During the tour you’ll learn a lot about living standards through the ages with the added challenge of pitching your knowledge against each other!

The history of Lund – a journey through a thousand years
Would you like to give your customers, international visitors or employees an insight into the city of Lund? Together we will explore two of the museum’s permanent exhibitions, Metropolis – Lund and the middle ages and A moment in Lund – the city from the 1500s to today, taking you on an informative journey through a thousand years of Lund’s history.

Dressed up – women’s fashion 1730–2000
Explore a rich selection of fashion garments and eveningwear specially selected from Kulturen’s own collections, including some previously unseen gems.
Together the objects create a timeline of opulence, luxury, glitz and glamour stretching from the 1700s to present day.
The exhibition explores a number of themes including the beauty ideal, materials and techniques. The craftsmanship, materials and objects themselves form a narrative that tells a story about social status, influential attitudes and the reflection of norms, ideals and aspirations of the time.

Typically Swedish!? From Midsummer magic to ”fika”
Swedish celebrations and traditions are an experience to behold. The enchanted feel of Midsummer’s Eve, the atmospheric glow of Lucia’s candle in the dark of winter and the Easter witches’ colourful mischief never cease to fascinate.
You will learn about noteworthy Swedish festivals, how they were celebrated in the past, and how they are still celebrated today. Look at these cultural events a little closer and we find that what we often perceive as being typically Swedish has at some point in time been adapted from other cultures. Where do the Christmas tree and maypole come from? Who was Lucia? What constitutes a Christmas gift? We will answer these and many other questions during the tour.
Even Swedish business culture is put under the lens when we talk about Swedish traditions and culture. “Fika” and “lagom” (roughly translated as “just right”) are concepts that are not entirely self-explanatory in an international context. We demonstrate how an awareness of cultural similarities and differences is a crucial prerequisite for successful intercultural dialogue.

Discover Kulturen’s Östarp with Anna the maid
Kulturen’s Östarp is a living example of rural life in the mid-1800s, presenting a collection of buildings, animals and gardens set in a historic cultural landscape. Gamlegård (directly translated as “the old farmstead”) is a typical Scanian timber-framed farmhouse built in 1812. The farmstead also includes a beautifully landscaped garden, a watermill, a windmill, a shed for the preparation of flax and a malt house.
Join Anna the maid for a tour around Gamlegård as she tells you about everyday life on a Scanian farm.
