Women are claiming their place in the public arena. Whether she pursues a career, cuts her hair short or smokes cigarettes, the modern woman breaks with conventional roles. Make-up and short skirts are initially only for the most courageous, but the new trends spread rapidly. At the same time, the range of products on offer grows, the advertising industry professionalises, and mass consumption gathers speed.
Established norms of what is considered female and male change. It becomes possible to express identities other than the traditionally feminine and masculine. Homosexuality is a crime throughout the 1920s, but there is still room for the androgynous and transgressive. To some this comes as a liberation, to others as a threat.
